Fundraising Emma takes campaign to UTV

AS the first ever Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week got under way on Monday, the message was hitting home hardest with Mid-Ulster Mail employee and Moneymore native Emma McCann.

Emma, who lost her mother through the disease, is currently in the middle of a fundraising campaign that will see her raise 10,000 in aid of the cause.

And tonight (Wednesday 18 November), Emma will feature on UTV Live’s current affairs programme at 10.30pm with host Paul Clarke.

Emma is naturally happy to have her fundraising efforts recognised this week but is also confident it will raise awareness of the life-threatening disease.

“I’m happy to be able to get my message across,” she said. “I became aware of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Week through my fundraising and I was only too happy to get involved.

After featuring on Stephen Nolan’s BBC Radio Ulster programme on Tuesday of this week, Emma looks forward to her TV appearance as a chance to tell the true story of the disease.

“It’s the fifth most common cause of cancer death in the UK and is under resourced in research and treatment compared to other cancers,” said Emma. “Only 3% of those diagnosed are still alive after five years.

“Basically, it means that 97 people out of every 100 diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer will not survive for more than five years.”

The harrowing figures have hit home the message for many this week and Emma hopes that her public awareness of the issue will mean more support for Pancreatic Cancer in years to come.

“It’s important that Pancreatic Cancer is a disease that everyone should be aware of,” insisted Emma. “The figures speak for themselves and the figures are not good.

“Although I am undertaking a number of fundraising events, this is more about raising awareness of what is a really dangerous illness, and I will do anything that raises awareness of the killer disease.”

Emma will feature on UTV Live tonight (Wednesday 18 November) from 10.30pm.

As part of her fundraising, Emma will take part in a bag packing day at Tesco in Cookstown on Saturday 21 November and will perform a static 100km cycle at Meadowlane Shopping Centre on December 19th.
