Help for Cookstown people struggling with debt
DEBT Action NI is an Advice NI project located in Cookstown, which has been operating since 2009.
Since then the project has been able to help 5,500 people deal with over £100.5 million in debt.
Debt Action NI is aimed at helping the most financially vulnerable in Northern Ireland and the purpose of the project is to help people manage their debts better and empower them to become more financially capable by taking control of their own money.
Advisers can help people cope with everyday financial struggles. They can assist with maximising income, budgeting and working out how much money is available to pay debts and which debts need to be paid first.
They can contact creditors and try and get them to freeze interest, waive charges and accept realistic repayment offers.
Depending on the client circumstances they can support and advise on the range of debt relief options including Debt Relief Orders and IVAs. They can also help in cases where an individual is at risk of eviction or has received a repossession order on their property.
The Debt Action NI service is delivered in the South Tyrone area by S.T.E.P. through their Dungannon and Cookstown offices.
This service was launched last Tuesday (September 25).
Fiona Magee, Advice NI Deputy Chief Executive said they are delighted to be able to make this valuable service available across the area.
“Our advisers are professionally trained and will support people to find the best option to deal with their debts. Our service is completely free, confidential and open to anyone concerned about their finances. The service will be available at the Cookstown branch located at SVP Centre, 35 Loy Street, on Tuesday and Thursday.
