It’s a messy business... and it MUST STOP NOW

DOG fouling is on the increase in Magherafelt’s main cemetery.

Many pet owners are allowing the dogs to poo on grave plots at Polepatrick.

The local Council has decided to increase patrols carried out by their enforcement officer in an effort to catch those responsible.

The monthly meeting heard that Polepatrick’s site attendant has noticed a marked increase in dog fouling incidents over the summer.

Director of Operations Andrew Cassells told councillors that signs were erected a number of years ago which clearly highlighted areas of the park which were off limits to dogs irrespective of whether they were on a lead or not.

“Unfortunately we have to report that many pet owners totally disregard the signage and a number are prepared to let their pets roam freely around the park,” said Mr Cassells.

Council Chair Councillor Paul McLean said he had noticed a number of cars parked outside the park early in the morning before it opened.

He said it might be worthwhile if the dog warden could carry out a few inspections before the gates opened to the public.
