SINN Féin councillors Peter Bateson and Deborah Ní Shiadhail turned out last Saturday morning, joined by Magherafelt Sinn Féin cumann members and residents of Killowen, for a community clean-up day.

The day, organised by local activists, was intended to be a chance for all the residents to get involved in cleanin up their estate. The event saw a skip and litter picking equipment provided by Magherafelt Council.

Deborah Ní Shiadhail said it was great to see so many of the local residents coming out to support the day.

“I’m sure there were over fifty of us here at any given time. People really took advantage of the opportunity to give every corner a good clear out and everything from old fridge-freezers, beds, bikes, TV’s, trampolines and a lot more was lifted,” she said.

The skip was filled to the brim and there were a couple of lorry runs to the Recycling Centre and I’d like to extend a thank you to my party colleague Peter Bateson for his help. It would have been difficult getting it all shifted without his assistance.

“Overall it was a great day for the community, not only for sprucing up the street but it turned out to be a great day for community spirit and bonding. The feedback has been fantastic, it would be great to see more community initiatives like this across Magherafelt and beyond and I’m sure this won’t be last co-ordinated by our cumann,” she added.
