Local jobless rate continues to rise

THE unemployment rate in the Magherafelt District Council area has risen again by just over one per cent during last month.

Since the beginning of this year, another 185 people have joined the dole queue, representing an increase of 16.1% over the year so far.

That means the unemployment rate for the Magherafelt area has witnessed the second highest increase over the course of 2013 out of the 26 local council areas in Northern Ireland.

A total of 1,331 people claimed unemployment benefits in Magherafelt last month.

That compares with 1,110 in the Cookstown Council area, and 1,704 people in the Dungannon district.

Meanwhile, Dungannon’s rate of unemployment has dropped slightly - by one per cent - over the course of the year so far.
