Magherafelt in top three for wasting energy - EST

MAGHERAFELT district is among the top energy wasters in the UK, according to figures from the Energy Saving Trust (EST).

Figures produced by the campaign group claim that 18 council areas in the Province are in the top 20 of the worst carbon wasters.

Magherafelt is in third position – behind Down and Omagh – and Cookstown comes sixth in the list of shame for carbon footprints or CO2 emissions.

Belfast came out best for Northern Ireland – in 157th place on the list of 435.

Noel Williams, head of EST in Northern Ireland, said: "This latest green barometer report is not about singling out local authorities; rather it is about the local authority areas and the individuals who live there.

"Each area is unique and has its own challenges and opportunities. We can tailor advice to local authorities and the individuals who live within their areas."

The new research groups people living in the UK into 10 'segments' according to the amount of energy used per household, their use of cars and attitudes towards the environment.
