Man assaults police ‘in a moment of madness’
A YOUNG Magherafelt man was said by his lawyer to have assaulted two police officers “in a moment of madness”.
Before the local Magistrates Court was Eoin O’Neill (21), of Killowen Drive, who received a one-month jail sentence suspended for 12 months for disorderly behaviour.
O’Neill was also Conditionally Discharged for 12 months for assaulting the two officers.
The case had been adjourned from a previous court to monitor defendant’s behaviour.
A defence lawyer said that O’Neill should be given credit for having managed to keep out of trouble during the past six months.
A PPS lawyer said the incident happened at Queen’s Avenue, Magherafelt on October 3 last year when O’Neill came out of Slemish View shouting at police officers.
She claimed he had punched an officer and head-butted another during the incident.
The lawyer appearing for O’Neill said he had been heavily intoxicated at the time and had “acted out of character”.
