Man to face trial for student’s death

A MAN is to stand trial accused of causing the death of a young Magherafelt woman by careless driving almost four years ago.

Brian McCauley (31), of Beechwood Avenue, Derry, is charged with causing the death of 22 year old Caoimhe Kerr.

The University of Ulster student was struck by a van after getting off a bus at Glenshane Road close to the Castledawson roundabout around 5.30pm on November 6 2008.

A defence lawyer argued that a prima facie case had not been made against the defendant.

But District Judge Amanda Henderson rejected the submission, saying that the accused had a case to answer.

She returned him for arraignment at Londonderry Crown Court on October 3, on bail of £500, when he appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.
