Man was sick in police car, court told

A MAN who was sick in the back of a police car, appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on a criminal damage charge.

Nigel Watterson (48), of Riverside North, Castledawson, also faces a charge of simple drunk in the village on June 3.

The court heard that police had arrested the defendant for being drunk and were taking him to the police station when the incident happened, resulting in a cleaning bill of £138.

A defence lawyer said Watterson had fthe drink but “fell off the rails earlier this year.”

He said the defendant had lost a lot in his life due to alcoholism but was attempting to address the problem and had an appointment with the addiction service in the local area.

Deferring sentence until November 7, District Judge Des Perry remarked that it was a shame that a man who was otherwise lawabiding should come to crime late in life.

He told Watterson to repay the £138 to the PSNI, seek help and stay out of trouble.
