‘Mean’ thieves steal charity box

HEARTLESS thieves have stolen a charity collection box from a hairdresser’s salon in Dungannon.

On Wednesday afternoon, a number of adults went into the premises and distracted staff.

After they had left, staff noticed that a Barnardo’s collection box had been stolen.

Said a police spokesman: “Many people will find it hard to think of a meaner or more despicable theft. A number of charities rely on collection boxes for funds, and the business people who support them usually place the boxes in a place that is accessible to customers.

“Putting the charity boxes out of reach of customers is defeating their purpose. Some businesses do physically attach the collection boxes to the counter, and that is something others can think of.

“Another possibility is to ensure that any CCTV cameras cover the counter area where the till and collection boxes are kept.”
