Mid-Ulster groups benefit from Big Lottery awards
FOUR groups in the Cookstown and Magherafelt areas are sharing in a grants windfall from the Big Lottery Fund’s Awards for All programme.
The small grants programme is awarding grants totalling more than £11,000 to the local groups as part of a grants roll-out of £658,459 to 84 groups across Northern Ireland. (See separate attachment for full list of awards).
Awards for All offers community, voluntary and statutory groups the chance to apply for small grants of between £500 and £10,000 that will have a big impact on local communities and the lives of people most in need.
In Cookstown the Gort Kids Afterschool Club, which provides care, education and activities for children out of school hours and during the school holidays, has been awarded a grant of £1,678 to buy equipment and provide trips for its summer scheme.
The funding will mean the group can continue to develop its activities and improve the health, confidence and education of the young people that take part.
Kennedy’s LOL, based in Stewartstown, is also receiving a grant of £9,432 to carry out improvements to its hall. The group will replace the kitchen and install new toilets in the venue, helping to make it a comfortable place where local people can take part in activities and events.
Over in Magherafelt The Big Well, a community group which promotes Ulster Scots history, language, culture and tradition in the Tobermore area, has received a grant of £10,000. The group used the funding to hold an Ulster Scots event during the summer.
Derganagh Training and Development Association, which runs activities for people living in the Derganagh and Knockloughrim areas, has also been awarded £2,896 to carry out improvements to its hall.
The group will use the funding to get new floor covering and a new cooker and carry out renovations to their storage area, helping to make the venue more comfortable for the local people who use it.
