Mid-Ulster group making a noise about Multiple Sclerosis
MULTIPLE Sclerosis, a common disabling neurological condition, affects many people in Mid-Ulster.
But there’s help at hand in the form of support groups which allow people to meet other sufferers in an informal setting.
The support groups are often a lifeline for sufferers, giving them the opportunity to discuss their condition with others who have found themselves in a similar position.
The Mid-Ulster branch of the MS Society meets on the last Tuesday of the month in the Rainey Centre, Magherafelt.
MS can cause a wide variety of symptoms with many experiencing only a few, and it is unlikely that anyone will develop them all.
People can have different symptoms at different times and, although some are very common, there is no typical pattern that applies to everyone.
MS Awareness Week ran from April 27 until May 3 and supporters were busy aiming to generate awareness of the condition.
Across Northern Ireland, the MS Society hosted a series of events aimed at raising understanding of MS and challenging some of the misconceptions that exist about the condition and its impact on people affected by the disease.
Members of the MS Society took to the streets, distributing flyers and information, and they also hosted awareness and fundraising events.
At present members in Mid-Ulster are campaigning for the government to fund a trial of the drug Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) on the NHS so that people in the UK can reap the benefits of it - visit the website http://www.ldnnow.co.uk/main.html?src=%2F).
ITV show This Morning featured a talk on Multiple Sclerosis and LDN as part of MS Awareness week.
Dr Tom Gilhooly, the Scottish doctor who is a strong advocate for using LDN to help treat MS was interviewed.
Dr Gilhooly also talked about MSRC's bi-monthly publication 'New Pathways Magazine', which, for MS Awareness Week is being offered free for a year to new subscribers, in the UK. To get your free subscription, please telephone 01206 505444 or email info@msrc.co.uk.
The Mid-Ulster branch of the MS Society meets on the last Tuesday of the month in the Rainey Centre, unit 3, Magherafelt from 7:30pm to 9pm.
