MLA moves to ensure local roads treated in winter

A LOCAL Assembly Member says she has received assurances that Mid-Ulster’s roads are being treated to ensure their safety over the winter months.
Sandra Overend, Ulster Unionist MLA, made the comment following several tragic road accidents which took place on roads in the area during the month of December.
The Mid Ulster representative said: “The recent tragic accidents in the locality have been particularly difficult for those families who have lost loved ones over the Christmas period and my heartfelt sympathies are with them.
“Although all deaths of loved ones are tragic, road deaths are particularly hard to explain, and we will not understand fully the circumstances of these crashes until detailed forensic investigations are concluded.
“However, I felt it was important to contact Roads Service in the interim to reiterate to them the huge responsibility that lies with them in ensuring that the roads in Mid-Ulster are safe, especially during icy and severe weather conditions.”
Ms Overend said she had also requested a number of roads be reassessed for their inclusion on the gritting schedule by Roads Service.
She explained: “These include the Ballyheifer Road and the Aghagaskin Road in the Magherafelt area. Roads Service have agreed to reassess the volume of traffic on these roads and are to return to me following their investigations. If there are other roads that constituents are concerned about, please contact me at my Advice Office in Moneymore, on 02886748090.
“Although the number of road deaths across Northern Ireland last year was been relatively low, in Mid-Ulster there were a particularly tragic few weeks in December where five people lost their lives on our roads. One life lost on the roads is one too many, so it is encouraging to see that the Roads Service is doing all they can to prevent further loss of life.”
