NORTHERN Regional College has hosted a one day seminar on ‘Understanding Psychological Trauma & Dissociation: Dispelling the myths’ as part of a funded Connected programme.

The event which attracted prominent members within the Counselling Community from both Northern Ireland and the South of Ireland was delivered by Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Dr Michael C Paterson OBE.

The seminar provided Dr Paterson’s view on psychological trauma, while providing attendees with a greater understanding on how it can be presented to Counsellors during sessions with their clients.

Roisin Hornor, NRC Curriculum Manager for Social Care and Early Years commented that “As part of NRC’s Counselling Professional Development courses we hosted a workshop on Trauma. Dr Paterson’s interactive seminar was extremely popular and very informative whereby he explained the neurobiology of trauma and how this information is processed cognitively.

Throughout the course he explained and demystified dissociation, which is a phenomenon presented in all levels of psychological trauma. For counsellors

working in this field, it is important that they understand and recognise the many signs and symptoms of trauma and know how to work with their clients, while demonstrating high levels of empathy and competency.”

The college is offering a further series of one day Professional Development workshops which will cover Child Protection Training, Mental Health Awareness Training, Suicide Awareness, NLP, Self Harm and Working with Addiction.
