One week in and already vandals delay roadworks

A ROADS chief has hit out at vandals who knocked over 70 metres of kerbing at Moneymore Road, Magherafelt.

Section Engineer Gary Quinn said the vandalism could delay completion of improvement work by over a day.

Police are investigating the incident which happened overnight last Thursday.

Mr Quinn appealed to motorists to keep an eye-out for vandals in coming days and report anything suspicious to the police.

“We want the work to be completed within the allotted time frame which is eight weeks,” he said.

“We timed the start of the scheme to coincide with the school holidays and to cause as little inconvenience to road users as possible.

“But if the vandalism keeps happening we are going to get delay after delay in completing the scheme. This is something we don’t want.”

Part of the work involves the extension of a cycle path from Lester Gardens to the Meadowlane shopping centre.

Work on the 300,000 scheme began just over a week ago with short delays expected for the drivers of 10,000 vehicles that use road each day.

The reconstruction and resurfacing will continue through July and August when the lack of school traffic will reduce traffic volumes by about a third.

For further information on the project the public should contact, Roads Service 30, Station Road, Magherafelt; telephone number 028 7963 2308.
