Primary schools get go-ahead
TWO South Derry primary schools will be able to begin their building projects this financial year, the Education Minister Caitriona Ruane announced today.
Magherafelt Primary and Nursery Unit will receive 4.166m while St Columba's Primary in Draperstown will get 2.097m.
The schools are two of 14 across the Province to benefit from a 13m windfall.
In June, it was revealed which schools had passed all the Department of Education checks. A second list showed 24 schools needed to do more work on their bid for funding.
However, the two local schools are from the listed which required more work.
In the case of Magherafelt Primary there was concern around falling enrolment.
DUP MLA Ian McCrea today welcomed the announcement.
"I am delighted at the announcement by the Department of Education to give approval to the new capital build of Magherafelt Primary School and nursery unit. The DUP has been pressing the minister extremely hard on this issue for some period of time, " he said.
"I am aware of the positive impact that this decision will have on the school, the staff, pupils, parents and indeed the wider community within Magherafelt.
"There is a lot of work that has gone in to this project, and the staff and Governors of the school are to be commended for their hard work to improve the facilities used by local children."
