Quiz raises cash for Romanian orphanage

TWENTY-five teams from the Magherafelt area took part in a quiz to raise money to ease poverty in Romania.

The event - Our Place is Smarter Than Yours - raised a total of £1,240 which will be spent at an orphanage at Oradeo, where the Smiles Foundation has been at work for some years.

Organisers were Sydney Collins and Pandy Walshe, while the quiz master was Gerry Donnelly.

“The evening was a great success and was enjoyed by all those taking part,” said Sydney. “Mary’s really did a fantastic job in getting things organised for the quiz.”

The winning team was Deans Boys from Magherafelt and the ‘wooden spoon’ was awarded to the Discount Store, Magherafelt.

Several raffle prizes were awarded to lucky individuals on the night.

Sydney, who returns to Romania next month to help at the Smiles Foundation’s Joint Facility of Love for the elderly and disabled.

As on previous occasions, Sydney is still collecting good quality clothes, bed linen etc. for use in the orphanage and which he hopes to take out with him on a future trip.

Sydney would like to thank all the teams who took part; the businesses around Magherafelt which donated prizes for the raffle; the staff at Mary’s Bar, especially manager Tommy Doherty.

He added that the event was such a success that another quiz will be held on March 1, 2014,
