Road Service to fix entrance to large housing area

ROAD Service has confirmed it is to fix a dangerous section of road inside one of Magherafelt’s biggest housing areas.

Work is set to begin on resurfacing the entrance to the Sandybraes, Sandymount, Sandygrove and Salter’s Bridge developments after concerns were raised by residents last year.

Previously the Department of Regional Development had refused to move on calls to fix the road because responsibility for its maintenance belonged to a private developer, who went into liquidation in 2009, just before the completion of the new Salter’s Bridge Housing Development.

The road was left in such a state of disrepair that some gullies and kerbs are protruding up to two feet from the ground. Community representative Gary McCann pushed the department on the issue and highlighted the concern of residents, who feared that a fatality would occur on the heavily used street if it were not fixed.

Confirming this week that it was to begin work to fix the road, A DRD spokesperson said: “Roads Service can confirm that resurfacing works will be carried out at this location. The starting date for this work has yet to be finalised.”
