Slieve Gallion race rounds up mountain running season
THIS year the 10th running of the Slieve Gallion Mountain Race will round up the mountain running season as the final race of the 2012 NIMRA Grand Prix series.
Having previously been a NIMRA Championship race and a British & Irish Junior Mountain Running Championships venue, it is no surprise that the last mountain race of the season always goes down well with the seasoned mountain runners travelling from the Sperrins, the Antrim Hills and the Mournes.
With winning times of around 40 minutes, the 4.5 miles course takes the runners through Iniscarn Forest on forest tracks, to an open mountain loop on to the west side of the mountain, before rounding to summit cairn and descending back to the bottom of the forest.
The extremely varied course gives plenty of opportunity for runners to play on strengths and weaknesses.
Registration this Saturday is from 10am at the car park in Iniscarn Forest and the race starts at 11am. Entry fees are £5 for NIAF affiliated runners and £6 for non-affiliated runners. Tea and sandwiches will be provided at the finish. As well as open prizes, there will also be prizes for local runners.
Runners are advised to wear grippy or studded shoes and are asked to be prepared to carry a waterproof jacket in case of severe weather. For more information please contact 028 86748733.
