Star Track summer takes Olympic theme

ONCE again the Star Track Summer Camp will be held at the Meadowbank Sports Arena running track, Magherafelt from Monday 6 August to Friday 10 August from 10am to 1pm each day.

The scheme has been running for over 15 years, offering thousands of children between the ages of 5 and 15 years the chance to try out athletics with qualified coaches.

This year with the Olympics in London Star Track is looking for the new Usain Bolt by offering a £60 cash incentive to the sprinter who can beat 7.75 seconds over 60m.

Are you up for this challenge? We are also looking for the athlete who can do a run, jump and throw.

Think of Jessica Ennis who can do seven events. Remember she joined Star Track as a ten year old and credits it as one of the key experiences that led to her passion for athletics.

Star Track will be divided into three age bands. The mini minor group age 5, 6 and 7 years; the junior group, age 8, 9 and 10 years and the senior group 11 and under 15 years.

Each scheme covers all aspects of the sport, as participating young people are encouraged to run, jump and throw, the three base skills required of any athlete.

This year for the ‘Older’ age group we will be working on the ‘Pole Vault’.

This event usually favours the person who at some stage in their life have done gymnastics or who is quite devilish.

This promises to be an interesting event.

The camp will also be looking for young people interested in cross country running.

To sign up contact Meadowbank Sports Arena, telephone 02879397117 or pick up an entry form at Magherafelt Library or Maghera Leisure Centre or contact Barrie Holmes on 07803716184.

How much fun can you really take?
