Step up with the Mid Ulster Walking Club

IF you enjoy getting out and about then why not join Mid Ulster Walking Club this year.

Mid Ulster Walking Club is a hill/mountain walking club based in the heart of Ulster. They were formed in August 1989 and are one of the strongest walking groups around.

The Mid Ulster Walking Club was the inspiration of Dungannon man Trevor McKay. The first walk to Binevenagh and the second walk to Slieve Donard in the Mournes had members excited and so the Club took root and flourished.

Following its original format of a Sunday walk every three weeks the Club has, over its 23 years, walked hill, mountain and coast throughout the North of Ireland and Donegal. They cover all the mountains within Northern Ireland and Donegal as part of their annual programme.

Their next club walk takes place on Sunday 19 February and it is a lovely scenic walk from Newcastle to Dundrum along the coast of Co Down.

This is a great opportunity for anyone who ever thought of joining a walking club to do so now. This walk is all on flat ground and would be a great introduction for new people to come along and see what we as a club have to offer.

All walks are guided by experienced walk leaders, some who have been with the club from when it was formed. It’s a great way to socialise and get some exercise whilst taking in some of the most spectacular views Northern Ireland has to offer.

So why not join the club on their next walk, come along and meet up and we will only be too happy to share some of our experiences with you and show you what you have been missing.

Sunday walks are every three weeks, if you would like to join up with us on our next walk or any walk within our programme contact either John on 02887747733 or George on 02887784081.

They also have a very popular mid-week walks programme happening fortnightly on Thursdays known as the Mid Week Walkers or Thursday Club. They have a great programme to offer with walks all over Northern Ireland in country parks, hills and mountains and their annual trip to Rathlin Island. If interested contact Ronnie on 02886765142 or Jim on 02886763576 who will only be to happy to hear from you.

So what are you waiting for, pick up the phone and contact any of the above members and find out all about our walking clubs next walks or check us out on the clubs website www.midulsterwalkingclub.org.uk

If you are joining a walk, it is recommended you wear a comfortable pair of boots (no trainers); comfortable clothes (not jeans); comfy socks, waterproof coat; hat and gloves and bring a rucksack with food, drinks and a change of socks to make sure you are prepared!
