Stepping Out to Prevent Falls and Improve Bone Health- Coalisland

THE Dungannon Home Accident Prevention Group in partnership with Southern Trust are hosting an event on Falls Prevention and Improving Bone Health on Monday 5th November in Brackaville Parish Hall (COI), Coalisland starting at 4.00-6.00pm.

The event has been funded by the Public Health Agency and is aimed at older people who have experienced a fall or who concerned about falling.

Falls occur in over 30% of over 65s and 50% of those aged over 80 every year. Falls can often result in serious consequences, both physically and psychologically. In addition to bruising, fractures and in some cases death, a fall can reduce confidence and independence and increase isolation.

Nina Daly, Accident Prevention Officer with the Southern Trust explains “Many falls can be prevented and through this event we aim to emphasise the importance of looking after your health, keeping your home free from hazards and seeking help as soon as possible if you are afraid of falling or have experienced a near miss or an actual fall”.

The event will provide information on the Southern Trust’s Falls Clinics, the Southern Safer Homes Scheme which provides free home safety checks to those aged 65 and over, as well as other guest speakers who will share information on osteoporosis and bone health, fuel poverty and energy efficiency as well as falls prevention. A taster session on strength and balance exercises, which are highly recommended to help prevent falls, will be provided for those who wish to try these out. The event will finish with a tea and sandwiches and everyone who attends will be offered a free home safety aid and a range of information leaflets.

Gerard Rocks, Assistant Director (Acting), Promoting Wellbeing, Southern Trust said “this event is part of a number of activities aimed at reducing falls among older people. Through events such as these we are highlighting the importance of good bone health and the steps older people should take to improve their health, lifestyle and home environment, which can reduce their risk of a fall, as well as showing the type of behaviours that can lead to falls.”

Part of the day will also be used to highlight a DVD developed by HAPNI (Home Accident Prevention Group for Northern Ireland) and RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The DVD called ‘Wise Up…Watch Your Step’ highlights the common causes of falls in and around the home, the potential consequences of having a fall and the simple measures that can be taken to prevent them.
