Taxi hijacked and burnt out in Draperstown

A TAXI driver has been left in shock after hooded men robbed him and hijacked his vehicle in the Owenreagh Road area of Draperstown on Saturday night.

It happened after he picked up the men in the Castlebrae area of Newtownstewart at around 10.30pm. The victim is believed to have escaped unhurt, but shaken by the ordeal.

The thugs, described to be in their 30’s, asked him to take them to Plumbridge, but on arrival they then requested to be taken to Draperstown.

On reaching the Owenreagh Road area of Draperstown at 11.20pm, one of the men seated in the back of the taxi

held an object to the driver’s head and demanded money. Money was handed over and the driver was then asked to get out. The driver got out and ran off. The taxi was then set alight.

Detectives in Magherafelt would ask anyone who may have noticed two men getting into a taxi in the Castlebrae area of Newtownstewart at around 10.30pm or any suspicious activity in the Owenreagh Road area of Draperstown at around 11.30pm to contact CID on 0845 600 8000.

Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111
