Told police they were ‘not wanted’ in village
SENTENCING has been deferred into the case of a man who told police they “were not wanted” in Moneyneaney.
Peter Gerard O’Kane (30) of Drumderg Road appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court on Wednesday to face charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting police.
The charges relate to an incident on July 24th when police attended a licenced premises in the village of Moneyneaney. During the check, which happened after hours, O’Kane attempted to gain entry to the premises, which were closed. When asked to leave by police O’Kane verbally abused officers calling them “w******” and “b*******”. He was warned about his manner but responded by saying police were “not wanted in Moneyneany” and told them to “f*** off”.
He was cautioned and taken to a nearby police vehicle wher he continued to be disorderly and punched a rear side window. Police were forced to deply CS Spray in an attempt to restrain O’Kane. The 30 year-old continued to struggle but was eventually arrested and taken to Limavady custody suite where he remained until he “sobered up”, a prosecution solicitor said. He was charged the following morning with resisiting police, disorderly beahviour and attempted criminal damage. The latter charge was later withdrawn.
A defence solicitor for O’Kane described him as “no stranger” to the court for offences of this nature, but on this occasion had “involved himself” with police. She added that the circumstances around the incident was ”the same old story” where her client had taken too much drink. District Judge Des Perry said the 30 year-old didn’t do himself any favours” and warned him that if he continued to drink and act in this manner he would go to prison.
Warning O’Kane to stay out of trouble Judge Perry deferred sentencing until June 5th 2013.
