Voting ‘steady’ in Mid-Ulster by-election

editorial image

VOTING is reported as steady at many of the polling stations in Mid-Ulster - despite the cold and wet conditions.

The doors opened at more than 70 locations in the Dungannon, Cookstown and Magherafelt districts at seven o’clock this morning.

In Magherafelt voting got off to a slow start but the turnout picked up from midday onwards.

The four candidates - hoping to replace outgoing MP Martin McGuinness - have been busy visiting polling stations.

They are Francie Molloy (Sinn Fein), Patsy McGlone (SDLP), Nigel Lutton (Unionist Unity), and Eric Bullick (Alliance).

The first ballot boxes are due to arrive at Cookstown leisure centre shortly after 10pm.

The count is scheduled to get underway at around 10.15pm, and a result should be known within hours.
