Walkers stride out in Sperrins

A GROUP of 30 walkers participated in a two day walking event in the Sperrins last weekend.

Organised by Cookstown Tourist Information Centre, on Saturday, a family walk took place in Davagh Forest, led by Liz O’Connor. Walkers learnt about flora and fauna while following approx 5km of small paths through the forest.

On Sunday, walkers faced a challenging day in the high Sperrins completing the Altbritain Hill Walk. The four hour Grade 1 Hill Walk covered the peaks of Mullaghaneany and Meenard. The walk was led by Chris Kelly, weather conditions were good and the group who had travelled from all over Northern Ireland had an enjoyable day.

The walks were part of ‘Strolls in the Sperrins’ and were organised by Denise Campbell, Tourism Officer with Cookstown District Council.

She said: “As part of Cookstown District Council’s tourism programme we aim to facilitate visitors and the local community who would like to experience the Sperrins region and the many activities and attractions there are to offer, be it walking, cycling or touring.”

Another weekend of walking activities is planned for September, including orienteering in Drum Manor and a Slieve Gallion Hill Walk.

For further information on future events contact Cookstown Tourist Information Centre on 028 8676 9949 (option 2) or email tic@cookstown.gov.uk.
