Wimbledon win Cheevers tournament

THE 18th annual Nigel Cheevers Memorial tournament was won by Wimbledon HC.

The English guys hit the ground running on Friday night when they defeated fellow travellers Inverleith HC from Scotland.

The first quarter of this game was pretty even as both teams attempted to shake off any tiredness after their early morning flights.

Wimbledon eventually took the game by the scruff of the neck to run out winners 6 - 1.

Cookstown’s first game was on Friday night as well when they took on Dublin’s Railway Union HC. The Reds got their campaign off to a great

start with a 8-1 win. Greg Allen helped himself to a double hat-trick - the highlight being a great volley after his initial drag had been parried back to him by the keeper. Stuart Smyth and new signing Simon Todd were the other scorers.

On to Saturday and Wimbledon continued their mementum with a 4-1 win over the home side. Cookstown’s performence here was littered with errors which the English side capitalised on. In their second match of the day Wimbledon were involved in a crowd pleasing 4-4 draw with Railway Union, with the Dubliners equalising very late on. Cookstown’s poor form continued when they couldn’t overcome a youthful Annadale outfit and had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The final day of the tournament seen Wimbledon crowned as tournament winners when they defeayed Annadale 3-2. Cookstown returned to winning ways with a 2-1

win over Inverleith with Ian Sloan getting both goals. In the ladies competition Belfast Harlequins were tournament winners with visitors Inverleith Ladies in second spot Cookstown men continue their pre season preparations when they travel to Dublin this coming weekend to participate in Railway Union’s tournament.
