THE new book ‘Fire On The Mountain’ which tells the true story of the Darkley church massacre is published by Ambassador Books and Media whose director is from Magherafelt.
The launch of the book written by Pastor David Bell was attended by television presenter Paul Clarke MBE and director of Ambassador Books, Mark Linton.
Paul chaired the event introducing the leaders of Mountain Lodge Pentecostal Church and interviewing some of those present on that dreadful night in 1983. One lady displayed the hymn book which a bullet had pierced while in her hand the night when terrorists sprayed the wooden church building with automatic gunfire.
Mark Linton from Magherafelt, director of Ambassador Books and Media said the launch was an amazing night with a surprise visit of the UTV camera crew to film the event.
“With his mild manner and being an experienced broadcaster he was able to expound details of that event from those who were there. Many other officials were present including MLAs and leaders of other churches,” he added.
One witness described the shooting: “For a moment, we thought someone was throwing pebbles against the outside of the window panes, on that wintry November 1983 evening. After all, very few of us had ever heard the sound of gunfire before. Falling to the floor for cover, we realised all too quickly what was taking place - the church had become the latest target in the Northern Ireland ‘Troubles’. After what seems an eternity, the sound of gunfire ceased. Several of the congregation were injured. Three were dead....”
Magherafelt man Mark added: “We are always looking for that story to print, from true stories, church history, children’s books, cookery etc. No book is too small or too large. Our editors, designers, proof-readers are some of the best on the market. Our success is not in the author or one person but a team that is seeking to publish the best and make it available for a local and global market.”
