Engineering worker was seen driving erratically on the Castledawson Road at 7.40am on November 25 last year

Outlining the case against him, the prosecution described how the engineering worker was seen driving erratically on the Castledawson Road at 7.40am on November 25 last year.

And that when PSNI officers went to his house, they found his vehicle to be warm to touch and detected a strong smell of alcohol from the defendant.

Nikolajs told police he had been drinking at work that morning and that his son collected him and brought him home - but his son was not at the property.

The defendant failed a preliminary breath test at the scene with a reading of 87mg and after being arrested, police found car keys in his pocket and later, a bottle of whiskey.

Judge Kelly also ruled that he must retake his NI test before driving again.
