A MAN who verbally abused a woman and threatened to damage her car while she sat alone in Tesco car park, Magherafelt, was jailed for a total of 11 months at the local Magistrates Court.

Martin McGuckin (27), paver, of Sperrn Drive, Magherafelt, was told by District Judge Des Perry that he was “a vile abusive drunk.”

McGuckin admitted charges of disorderly behaviour, threatening to damage property and common assault at the car park on the Ballyronan Road on December 3 last year.

He was also sentenced in relation to disorderly behaviour at the PSNI enquiry office in Magherafelt on December 15 last, and at Sperrin Drive on July 28 this year.

Bail was fixed for the purposes of an appeal against sentence.

A prosecuting lawyer said the defendant approached the driver’s window of the car and banged it, threatening to smash it around the woman.

He then got into a car which was caught on CCTV and made off. However, the defendant was later identified.

A defence barrister said McGuckin was a man who struggled with a drink problem and described the incident in the Tesco car park as “bizarre”.

Handing in two character references on behalf of the defendant, the lawyer said McGuckin held down a job and supported his mother. He pleaded with the court to give McGuckin “one final, final opportunity”.

Passing sentence, Mr Perry said the unfortunate woman sitting in her car must have been terrified by McGuckin’s behaviour.
