Mid Ulster buildings go purple for Pancreatic Cancer

Three landmark buildings in Mid Ulster will go purple this month to mark the beginning of Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month.

The Burnavon in Cookstown, Ranfurly House in Dungannon and the Bridewell in Magherafelt will be illuminated in purple from 14 – 17 November by Mid Ulster District Council, joining hundreds of other buildings nation-wide as part of Action4Noel: Pancreatic Cancer Action’s Turn It Purple awareness campaign.

The campaign presents an opportunity to celebrate the lives of loved ones dealing with a pancreatic cancer diagnosis and to remember those who have died of the disease, while also spreading a message of hope.

Chair of Mid Ulster District Council, Councillor Trevor Wilson, said:

“Pancreatic cancer is a little-known disease and yet it is the fifth most common cause of all cancer deaths with one person dying from it every hour. Much more needs to be done to improve this harrowing figure. If the Council can help raise awareness of pancreatic cancer by lighting the Burnavon, Ranfurly House and the Bridewell purple as part of the Turn It purple campaign then we are very happy to lend our support.”

Only around four per cent of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survive five years or more. This figure has hardly changed in 40 years. It is the fifth most common cause of all cancer deaths in the UK and it is predicted that by 2030 pancreatic cancer will overtake breast cancer as the fourth most common cancer killer.

Ali Stunt, CEO at Pancreatic Cancer Action, said, “Each year we are overwhelmed by the huge numbers of supporters who embrace the colour purple to raise awareness. We are delighted that Mid Ulster District Council are taking part this year again. It’s thanks to their participation that the event will become a success and more people will become aware.”

Kerry Irvine founder of Action4Noel, echoed these words saying, “I am delighted and incredibly grateful to Mid Ulster District Council for supporting Pancreatic Cancer Action’s Turn It Purple campaign again this year.”
