Ballyronan man who threw fireworks from car, told to '˜grow up'

A young south Derry man who was spotted by members of a police patrol throwing fireworks from a car last Halloween, was fined a total of £215 when he appeared at Magherafelt Magistrates Court.

Kevin O’Hagan (20), of Ashleigh Park, Ballyronan, admitted charges of using fireworks without a licence and two counts of throwing fireworks at Hillhead Road, Castledawson, on the evening of October 31 last year.

A prosecuting lawyer told the court that at 11.05pm police in plain clothes spotted a male passenger in the car light and throw a firework across the carriageway.

She said a short time later they observed the passenger again throwing another firework on to the carriageway.

The barrister added that no disruption was caused to traffic and police later spoke to O’Hagan, who made a full admission.

Admitting the offences Stephen Atherton, solicitor, pointed out that O’Hagan had just completed a 100 hours Community Service order in relation to another matter and assured the court there were no other matters pending.

Pleading for leniency, Mr Atherton stressed defendant was an industrious young man who has had problems in the past but had now put them behind him.

Imposing the fines, District Judge Alan White told O’Hagan it was “just time for you to grow up.”
