Magherafelt’s new first citizen is Sinn Fein Councillor Kate McEldowney.
She was elected as chairperson of Magherafelt District Council at tonight’s annual meeting and replaces party colleague Councillor Catherine Elattar.
She will hold the top post until the new Mid-Ulster super council comes into operation next April.
Councillor McEldowney, who pledged to work for all members of the community, was proposed and seconded by Councillors Peter Bateson and Brian McGuigan.
The new Vice-chairperson is Councillor Jim Campbell of the SDLP, who takes over from the DUP’s Councillor Anne Forde.
