PARENTS of primary school children to be more vigilant with their children’s internet use and to be aware of the potential dangers that they face when they go online.
Speaking after an event organised by the PSNI and primary schools in the Coalisland area on internet safety SDLP election candidate Malachy Quinn said, “With the internet and phone apps becoming more important in the classroom and at home it is vital that parents are educated in the potential dangers that children can face while online.
“This isn’t an issue that affects people in faraway places but to local people in the Dungannon area which was explained last night. It is very important that children and parents take advantage of the talks given by the PSNI in local schools in order to best protect their children from dangers online.
“One stat given by the PSNI last night was that it only takes six minutes from first contact for a paedophile to get a child to give personal information or send an image of themselves, that is truly frightening and parents need to know who their children are talking to online.
“The internet can be a fantastic thing for education and relaxation but it is always changing and parents as well as children need to be educated in the proper use and of the very real dangers they face in order to be safe.”
