Ryan David Jones (23) from Hollybank, was fined £400 and banned from the road for nine months when he admitted a charge of excess speed on March 29 this year.

The court heard that police were on duty at the A4 Dungannon Road when Jones’ vehicle was detected travelling at 110 miles per hour - 40 miles per hour in excess of the legal limit.

A defence solicitor told East Tyrone Magistrates Court that Jones travels to Dungannon daily for work.

The solicitor said Jones apologised to officers at the scene, at the first available opportunity.

The solicitor told last Wednesday’s court sitting that there was little or no explanation in the relation to the speed at which Jones was travelling.

District Judge John Meehan made reference to the 110mph speed and said that it was irresponsible.

“This is reckless for someone of your age,” he said.

“Those like you are the likely cause of death and serious injury on the roads. You have no consideration for others,” said the District Judge.

Imposing the fine and ban, the District Judge said it was the obligation of the court to deter offenders.

Jones was also ordered to pay an offender’s levy of £15.

In a separate motoring case at last Wednesday’s sitting, Justin Hobson (22) from the Fairfield estate in Dungannon, was fined £75 and had his licence endorsed with three penalty points when he admitted using a mobile phone while driving. The court heard the incident occurred at Market Square, Dungannon, on September 20, last year.

A lawyer said that police detected Hobson speaking on his mobile phone. He then entered his vehicle, the court heard. Hobson then started the engine and continued driving with his mobile held to his ear, before negotiating a roundabout, according to the lawyer. Hobson was also ordered to pay a levy of £15.
