The Health Minister Edwin Poots has defended the impasse on the Police and Fire training College at Desertcreat in Cookstown.

On Sunday, UUP councillor Trevor Wilson called on Mr Poots to sign off the deal, as he is the minister responsible for the NI Fire and Rescue Service.

In a response to the Mid Ulster Mail, the Health Minister pointed to the spiralling cost of the project.

“The costs of this project have increased significantly since the business case was approved in 2011. Whilst there has been significant work undertaken to identify and reduce the cost overrun, this has taken time and has caused some delay to the project.

“The project team has developed an addendum to the business case for the increase in costs. My officials have concluded their review of the NIFRS element of this business case and I am now considering their advice.”

Construction had been due to start on the complex next month [October].
