THE Health Minister Edwin Poots has come under pressure to sign off on the final agreement for the police and fire training college in Cookstown.

Cookstown councillor Trevor Wilson claimed the NI Fire and Rescue Service had yet to formally commit to the training facility at Desertcreat.

Construction of the project which was first announced in 2004, had been due to start next month [October].

“If the Health Minister Edwin Poots is refusing to sign off on the project, there are serious questions to be answered as to why he has not assisted the progression of it, and delayed this major infrastructure development which is of very strategic importance to Northern Ireland,” said the UUP councillor.

“It is vital that Minister Poots accepts this responsibility and he should now do all in his power to ensure that the training college gets the go ahead as soon as possible, so that we can finally begin to see the benefits of this massive project in terms of the jobs it will create and the lasting legacy it will leave, benefitting the entire community throughout Northern Ireland.”
