Local solicitors are expected to boycott a public consultation meeting this afternoon relating to the proposed closure of Magherafelt Courthouse.

Speaking on behalf of the South Derry Solicitors’ Association, Mr Stephen Atherton said his Association are not prepared to bestow any form of legitimacy on the consultation.

He claimed the Department of Justice decision to close local Courthouses is unjustifiable and will damage access to justice for the public.

Mr Atherton described today’s consultation as “a sham and a game.”

Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service (NICTS) proposals to reduce the current statutory Court Divisions from seven to three.

The NICTS have put forward proposals to close Magherafelt Courthouse and transfer business to Dungannon Magistrates Court.
