A STEWARTSTOWN man is working in the USA on an initiative aimed at making beer-brewing simple and accessible.

Jonny Campbell, 27, a designer at Belfast-based company Cargo is working on a project in the USA which involves an appliance for brewing which can be controlled with your smartphone.

The project, entitled ‘Brewbot’ is aimed at amateurs, pubs and restaurants that want to break into craft beers, technology companies and breweries that want to run pilot brews of new beers.

The company moved the whole team to Portland, Oregon in the US, which is the microbrewery capital of America to launch their Kickstarter campaign.

The company have a goal of £100,000 and they managed to hit the halfway mark in just five days.

Jonny told the TIMES: “We have raised £62,959 in our first 12 days and are currently sitting at over 60% of our Kickstarter goal, with 18 days to go. We are overwhelmed with the response to date and are so grateful for each and every one of our backers for their support and feedback.”

Jonny added: “We hope to hit our target and open up the world of brewing.”

Brewbot was started at a festival in Portland called XOXO. The festival is about creativity, independence, and disruption.

Half of the Cargo team attended and left inspired to build something and after a lot of hard work, and many iterations, the team developed Brewbot: The Smart Brewing Appliance.

A year later the team returned to the XOXO festival with Brewbot.

They are spending a month on the West Coast visiting breweries and hop farmers, engaging with manufacturers.
