An Edendork man grew his own cannabis plants to “avoid interaction with undesirable elements in society”, a court has heard.

A solicitor for James Murray, 31, from Gortin Crescent, told the court that his client used the drug for medical purposes.

Police discovered a number of 2” tall plants in a cultivation tent at his home on December 9.

“He grew them to avoid interaction with undesirable elements,” he told the court.

District Judge John Meehan handed down a one month prison sentence which he suspended for three years in addition to a fine of £100.
