THE number of young people out of work in the local council areas of Dungannon and Cookstown has risen by around five per cent in the last five years.
The figures were revealed by the Minister for Finance and Personnel, Sammy Wilson.
The Minister provided details of the numbers of people aged between 18 and 24 claiming unemployment related benefits in 2006 and 2011.
According to the statistics, there were 155 young people out of work in 2006; by last year, that number had risen sharply to 355.
In the Cookstown Council area, meanwhile, 125 young people were without employment in 2006, compared with 180 five years later.
The situation in the Magherafelt area was similar, with 240 young people out of work last year, compared with 110 five years earlier.
