COOKSTOWN SDLP Cllr Tony Quinn has welcomed the recent development work carried out by Operational Services in Cookstown Cemetery.
Speaking after a number of site meetings with the Director of Operational Services Cllr Quinn told the MAIL he had highlighted concerns raised by members of the public regarding persistent flooding, damage to stone walls and their capping, provision
of adequately sized waste bins, and the unsightly location of a compound in the Forthill section of the cemetery.

“Since the initial concerns were raised I have worked closely with Operational Services to ensure the problems were properly addressed. To resolve the flooding issue a storm drain was installed inside the Westland Road South entrance which has helped to alleviate pressures on the existing drainage system and has subsequently reduced the risk of flooding.

“Immediate maintenance was also carried out on damaged stone walls and Operational Services have reassured me that a permanent work plan is being prepared for completion over the coming weeks, with inspections continuing on a regular basis thereafter.”

Cllr Quinn also reminded Operational Services of the concerns surrounding the unsightly compound at the Forthill section of the Cemetery and was reassured that planners are currently assessing this location and the area will be kept orderly while an alternative is approved.
