THIS Sunday (5 July) will see Nutts Corner Motorsports Centre in full life when the Ulster Karting Club hosts the third round of the Ulster Cup Series.
The series to date has once again produced superb racing in what is widely regarded as the province's main championship.
This Sunday's race though will also be a good chance for drivers that are also competing in the Southern Irish championships to
have a final full race shake down before the inagural visit of that championship to the circuit on 8 & 9 August.
The Ulster Cup series is a particularly tough one with points from heats and finals also counting. With even more on-circuit race time this year than before, the addition of pre-finals also gives spectatators an even greater packed day of motorsport.
The Ulster Cup round on Saturday will also be a day for some of the local British Championship contenders to keep themselves in race tune at the circuit now that there is less than two race meetings left at Nutts Corner Motorsports Centre before the British Championship round there on 22 & 23 August.
In the run up to that meeting the Ulster Karting Club hopes to be formally releasing details in the next few weeks of major media campaigns, in conjunction with the Department of Culture Arts and Leisure (DCAL), that will help put the sport in the province into the households of millions throughout Europe.
This Sunday's meeting though will see a big focus by locals in the Ulster Cup and in particular the junior classes which have really impressed all this season. With the likes of World A1 GP driver Adam Carroll starting out his motorsport career in junior classes at UKC races at Nutts Corner Motorsports Centre then the juniors really are aware of how important a good result in the series can be.
Chambers takes the honours in Tynagh
The big local story though this week was the big win by Moneymore's Cole Chambers of the C plate meeting at Tynagh, Galway. Young Chambers has really been on the upwards move of recent in the Cadets class and after a very tough race at Tynagh he took his first big career victory.
This is a big move for Cole and after a spectacular drive through the field in his last outing at Nutts Corner Motorsports Centre he is rapidly becoming a threat to the top of the Ulster Cup series leaderboard.
DUP Mid Ulster MLA Ian McCrea has congratulated young kart racer from Moneymore, Cole Chambers who won the IRL title in the Junior Cadets class at Tynagh in Galway last weekend.
Speaking today Ian McCrea said:
"I would like to congratulate Cole Chambers on his superb achievement at the All Ireland Championship Race at Tynagh in Galway.
I know Cole's family and I have no doubt that his recent success has brought a great sense of pride to them.
Cole had a tough race but persevered to victory and I know that he will be keen to add to last weekend's win and I wish him every success for the future."
This Saturday's meeting at Nutts Corner Motorsports Centre will get underway at 10am with the first set of heats. Finals will be just after lunch.
