ONE of the oldest association football clubs in the country could go out of existence if it can't use the pitch at Meadowbank, a Magherafelt councillor has claimed.
Ulster Unionist George Shiels has asked for a meeting with local council officials to find out if an accommodation can be reached over the use of the pitch.

Magherafelt Reds received notification from the council last week that it would no longer have preferential use of the pitch.

“Difficulties between the use of the pitch by the Reds and hammer throwers from the local athletics club have arisen,” said Mr Shiels, whose family is steeped in football.

“I feel that an accommodation can be reached here which will allow pitch use by all parties during the different sporting seasons.

“Magherafelt Reds is one of the oldest clubs in the country and I feel it’s important that a base is found for them within the town of Magherafelt.

“I have spoken to the club officials and they are obviously very anxious that they have a future playing home games within their own town and I am hopeful that this issue can be resolved.”
