SOCCER: Injury time winner denies Cookstown Olympic

COOKSTOWN Olympic travelled to Doagh last Saturday to play FC Ballynure Olympic started this contest well and had a couple of half chances in the early exchanges but it was Newbuildings who went in front after 25 minutes.

They were exerting pressu
re on Olympic but against the run of play the scores were level after 30 minutes when a Kevin Kelly free kick caused a goal mouth scramble and Gary Donaldson stabbed the ball home. The first half then was end to end without any clear chances.

Olympic came out quickly in the second half and went two one up after 56 minutes when a direct free kick from Ryan O'Neill left the Newbuildings keeper flapping.

The home team however came back strongly and Cookstown's keeper Kevin Leonard made a good save from a one-on-one on 60 minutes but Newbuildings were not to be denied four minutes later when they strode through to equalise.

The remainder of the game was a typical cup affair with both teams having chances until the 3rd minute of added on time when Newbuildings grabbed the winner.

Cookstown Olympic Colts
An understrength Colts team travelled to play Magherafelt SB Res in the first round of the Linda Welshman Cup last Saturday and after a 1-1 draw after extra time won through 5-4 in the dreaded penalty shoot out.

The Colts formation fazed the home team and a deflected shot after 15 minutes gave the Colts the advantage. Magherafelt were stung into action and pushed hard but the Colts defence of Bloomer and O'Hare with McCabe sweeping stood their ground.

The second half was more of the same with Magherafelt trying get back on level terms and they managed this on 65 minutes. The game then became a typical cup match with plenty effort but no scores and this was the same in the extra time.

The Colts penalty takers of John McGuigan, Darren McCabe, Lee Mitchell and Richard McMenemy matched the home teams scorers but when the fifth Magherafelt penalty went wide Ryan Devlin steeped up to sore and put the Colts through to the second round.

Training will now change to 8pm to 9pm on Thursdays on the synthetic pitch.


Fundraising
The Lucky 4 Lottery numbers for Saturday 24 October were 6, 7, 16 and 19, and there were no winners who matched all 4 numbers for the £375 jackpot. There were no winners who matched three numbers. The jackpot will now increase to £400 for next week's draw and tickets are available from any committee or team member.
