COOKSTOWN District Council has put together a comprehensive sports and physical activity programme for young people of all abilities and interests.
Multi-Skills camps will take place across the district in four different locations, and sports specif
ic camps on offer include grassroots soccer, tennis, netball, outdoor pursuits, canoeing and sailing.
For people with a disability, a Friday Club will run for six weeks at the Mid Ulster Sports Arena from July 17th to August 28th.
The IFA Grassroots Development Officer, Rodney McAree, will deliver a multi sports programme. This programme gives people with a disability an opportunity to participate in structured sport as well as increasing their confidence and improving their self-esteem.
All activities will be led by fully qualified staff that will ensure the young people encounter a fun and enjoyable experience in a safe and structured environment. Qualified coaches include Rodney McAree (IFA Grassroots Development Officer) and Ronnie Ballantine (Pro-Serve Tennis).
The focus of the programmes will be on FUNdamental movement skills. The development of these skills, using a positive and fun approach, will contribute significantly to future athletic achievements.
Programmes will be delivered at a range of venues across the district.
The Summer Sports Camps and Physical Activity Programmes are supported by Cookstown and District Sports Forum and Sport NI. Funding from the Public Health Agency, secured through Cookstown and Western Shores Area Network, has allowed the programme to expand to include outdoor pursuits for 14-16 year olds which will take place over three days across three venues.
At the launch of the programme Community Sports Coordinator Paula McGuigan described this year's programme as one of the best yet. "Extra funding from the Public Health Agency has given the opportunity to expand the programme. With last year's Summer and this years Easter programmes such a success, vast interest is expected."
Numbers are limited for each programme and age restrictions apply. Places will be allocated on a first come first serve basis and therefore participants are advised to book now by contacting the Mid Ulster Sports Arena on 028 8676 7135.
