Cookstown IV 3
Lisnagarvey V 1
Friday night under the lights at Steelweld Park and adorned in the clubs new Solo Petroleum sponsored playing strip, Cookstown IV faced an unbeaten Garvey team.
Surviving the early pressure the Reds settled themselves with Gareth brown and Alistair Thom keeping possession at the back waiting for the opportune moments to go forward. The first opportunity came when a searching pass from Steven Stewart found Sam Cuddy who’s determination in the circle enabled him to find Marc Crooks at the back post who made no mistake hitting the back of the net.
Cookstown failed to capitalise on early attempts but one of Philip Morton drivesinto the circle won a short corner, this time all the components of the short were executed perfectly and Thom made no mistake with a thunderous drag flick into the top corner.
Cookstown continued their form into the second half with the right hand side of Brian Simpson and Donaldson linking up to win possession and find Allen in the dee who swivelled and smashed the ball towards the bottom corner, but as Allen wheeled away in celebration the Garvey keeper pulled off the save of the match to deny the top goal scorer.
Now at 2-1, Cookstown upped the attack another gear. Paul Morrow rode a few strong Garvey tackles before finding Allen in the corner, Allen skipped past three Garvey players and made his way inside the dee and rocketed a shot of the angle of the goal which if only a inch lower would have been the goal of his life.
Allen eventually got his deserved goal, Neil Barnes picked out a 60 yard cross field pass to Sam Cuddy who fed Allen with his back to goal who hammered a snapshot past the keeper to give the reds breathing space for the remainder of the game and collect the win.
This game was won by the work rate and determination of every player showing the passion and desire.
Thanks to Brian Thom for umpiring duties.
