On Wednesday night Cookstown Ladies played Ballymena in the penultimate match of the season.
After having several tough encounters with them in the past Cookstown knew this would be a difficult match. Ballymena started very strongly playing very high and putting the Cookstown defence under a lot of pressure.
This was dealt with effectively by Gail Brown and Rachel Campbell who executed some superb tackles.
Ballymena won several short corners but Beth Williamson in goal was having a superb match and was not to be beaten, frustrating the Ballymena forwards.
A quick break from the Brown twins saw a great cross into the circle finished off accurately by Laura McAleece. This was the boost Cookstown needed and saw them go into the team talk more confident.
In the 2nd half the girls came out very strong, some linking play by Rebecca Smyth and Rachel Millar won several short corners and after several attempts at their traditional pieces, a modified corner by Ruth Brown saw her expertly flick the ball into the net.
The girls were working well together and Claire Brown was creating havoc down the right. Ballymena fought hard and continued to play high hockey allowing Cookstown to break again and a pass to Leanne Johnston at the top of the circle saw her turn and hammer the ball into the back of the net.
The game was not over continued pressure and tireless work from both teams saw Ballymena fight to the bitter end, but Cookstown had one more in reserve. A mazy run by Claire Brown saw her pick out McAleece who found the back of the net for the 2nd time. An excellent result and a hard fought performance which hopefully the girls can take into their final match.
