COOKSTOWN Ladies 2nd XI played host to Ballyclare 3rd XI in the first round of the Junior Cup. Cookstown started strongly and it wasn’t long until the opening goal which was a great ball into the circle by Rachel Stewart that left Lauren Shaw on the back post to slip the ball through the legs of the Ballyclare keeper. This goal lifted the Cookstown team.
As half time came a great combination of play from backs to forwards set up Rachel Stewart on her ‘signature’ reverse hit which was saved by the Ballyclare keeper, keeping the score 1-0 at half time.
Cookstown made some changes to their team at the half time break and started the second half strongly, determined for another goal. Great passing from Gemma Stewart, Amy Parke and Alex Scott at the back sent Melanie Johnson on a run down the line to send a great ball into the circle. The ball was picked up by Rachel Stewart who couldn’t get her shot away, but then fell to Corrin McWhirter who’s shot struck just wide of the post.
As full time was closing the tiredness was starting to show in the girls but they battled on and another goal came through a penalty corner strike by Rachel Stewart set up by Melanie Johnson. This goal had really sealed Cookstown’s place in the next round. Although this didn’t stop Ballyclare from trying to get on the score sheet.
A break from the Ballyclare team sent them on the only real threat of the game, but Cookstown goalkeeper Kayleigh Hodgett was quick to react and dealt with the attack in an ‘interesting’ way- keeping Ballyclare at bay.
As the final whistle went the final score ended 2-0 to Cookstown Ladies and into the second round of the Junior Cup.
