Draperstown horse owner celebrates big win Newmarket

Draperstown racing horse owner Laurence O’Kane celebrated a windfall on Saturday when Poet’s Prize scooped the first big pool on offer at Newmarket easily winning the £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.

“It was a fantastic performance and a great ride by Graham. We’ve done it again. Last year me and David picked up a big prize in Ireland,” said Mr O’Kane.

“This horse has been progressing slowly and has been one of those slow burners. He’s a proper horse and he will step up. Graham said he was going away from them in the last 100 yards.”

The David Barron colt was never far off the pace set by Cherry Kool and Comedy Night before going all out for success in the final quarter-mile.

Responding well to jockey Graham Gibbons’ urgings, Poet’s Prize (7-1) asserted in the closing stages to take the £81,165 first prize by half a length from Receding Waves, with favourite Twin Sails the same distance away third.
